2. Products

Altorney offers two separate products. Each can be used independently; neither requires the other.

  • Altorney Platform: a self-service marketplace and management platform for sourcing, onboarding, managing, and paying legal document reviewers.
  • MARC: an AI document analysis engine for legal document review, internal investigations, regulatory inquiries, and breach response.

Clients may license either product on its own. Combined pricing is available for clients using both products.

3. Altorney Platform

3.1 What it is

The Altorney Platform is a self-service marketplace that lets law firms, ALSPs, corporate legal departments, and government agencies source and manage vetted legal document reviewers directly, without a traditional staffing agency.

3.2 How it works for clients

Clients define “Reviewer Types” (skills, jurisdiction, bar status, pay rate). Matching reviewers apply directly. The platform automates conflict checking, onboarding, time tracking, and invoicing. Account provisioning is free; Altorney charges a percentage markup on the reviewer rates the client sets.

3.3 For reviewers and contract attorneys

Reviewers and contract attorneys use the Altorney Platform to create profiles (bar admissions, jurisdictions, languages, document review experience, availability), browse and apply directly to posted projects, complete conflict checks and onboarding, track time, and receive payment under the project terms set by the client.

Reviewers pay nothing to join or use the platform. Pay rates are visible to reviewers before they apply.

The reviewer network includes licensed attorneys as well as other legal professionals, such as paralegals, litigation support specialists, and translators. The network is primarily US-based, with reviewers also located in the UK, Canada, the EU, and other locations. Thousands of reviewers are on the platform, staffing hundreds of active projects per month.

Reviewers may work as 1099 independent contractors, as W2 employees, or both. Clients choose the engagement model for their projects; reviewers choose whether to work under one or both models. W2 employment is administered through Ascen as the employer of record.

Altorney verifies bar status, identity, language skills, and background checks for reviewers on the platform. Reviewers join at https://portal.altorney.com/join.

3.4 Who uses the Altorney Platform

The Altorney Platform is used by law firms, alternative legal service providers (ALSPs), corporate legal departments, and government agencies that need to source, onboard, manage, and pay legal document reviewers. ALSPs use the platform to source the reviewers they deploy on their own client matters.

Projects span all matter types. Typical use cases include litigation document review, regulatory responses, internal investigations, second requests, data breach review, and privilege review.

Published client stories include Lineal (https://altorney.com/altorney-and-lineal/) and Sandline Global (https://altorney.com/navigating-the-challenges-of-large-scale-document-reviews-how-altorney-can-help/). A MARC case study covering a Fortune 500 matter is available at https://altorney.com/case-study-marc-delivering-on-its-promises/.

3.5 Pricing (Altorney Platform)

Account provisioning and project posting are free. Clients set the reviewer pay rate for each project; Altorney charges a percentage markup on approved reviewer time, and the client sees the fully loaded rate before engaging reviewers. Markup percentages vary by engagement structure (1099, W2, and international engagements are priced differently).

There are no minimums, platform fees, setup fees, or conversion fees. The only additional charges are for enhanced background checks beyond Altorney’s standard screening and for provisioning a secure Windows 365 review environment; everything else is included.

4. MARC

4.1 What it is

MARC is Altorney’s AI document analysis engine for legal document review, internal investigations, regulatory inquiries, and breach response. MARC applies matter-specific protocols to document populations and returns proposed classifications, extractions, entity references, factual chronologies, and source-cited answers for attorney validation.

MARC automates first-pass review decisions before documents are exported to a hosted review platform, reducing the volume of non-responsive and duplicative data that must be hosted or attorney-reviewed. MARC returns proposed classifications with explanations and source citations; attorneys validate rather than perform manual first-pass reads.

4.2 Classifications

MARC codes documents across: Relevance, Responsiveness, Privilege, Issues, PII, PHI, Trade Secret, Confidentiality, Personal vs. business communications, and custom classifications defined by counsel. Every output includes a reasoning trace and pointers to the source passages it relied on.

4.3 PrivShield (privilege review)

PrivShield is MARC’s privilege module. It identifies parties, detects the presence of legal counsel, explains why a communication qualifies as privileged, and generates privilege-log entries as a byproduct of the analysis. It runs pre-review across the full data set and post-review as a final privilege screen before production.

4.4 MARC Investigate

MARC Investigate structures investigation data into narratives. Workflows start from a case description, a chat with the data, or uploaded artifacts (complaints, subpoenas, RFPs); MARC generates a “Background Protocol” for counsel to review and edit. An Adaptive Learning Engine takes yes/no tagging, re-ranks the dataset, and surfaces documents and patterns not identified by the initial protocol. Investigation types include workplace misconduct and HR, fraud, whistleblower and ethics matters, corporate security and threats, compliance and regulatory matters, and IP theft and data breaches.

4.5 MARC Assistant

MARC Assistant is a built-in chat interface for asking natural-language questions across the corpus and inspecting the source-cited passages behind each answer.

4.6 Deployment and security

MARC typically runs inside the client’s own environment (Azure, AWS, GCP, or on-premises hardware) using pre-configured Kubernetes or Docker scripts, so documents are analyzed in place. Data does not leave the client’s environment unless the client explicitly routes analysis to an approved external LLM provider. MARC ships with local open-weights models (e.g., Llama, Gemma) that run behind the firewall and is model-agnostic. Local model servers exist only for the duration of a job, are destroyed on completion, and retain nothing. A hosted option is available for clients who prefer it.

Altorney maintains SOC 2 Type II compliance and ISO/IEC 27001 certification (announcement: https://altorney.com/altorney-achieves-iso-iec-27001-certification-adding-to-existing-soc-2-type-ii-compliance-and-setting-a-new-security-benchmark-for-ai-powered-legal-technology/).

4.7 Defensibility

MARC follows the sampling, validation, and iterative-improvement methodology accepted for keyword, TAR, and CAL processes. Every decision ships with its reasoning and cited source passages. MARC surfaces close calls and edge cases for attorney review rather than forcing binary decisions. Matter-specific Protocols are the disclosure surface for cooperation with opposing counsel; the underlying system prompts are Altorney’s proprietary IP.

4.8 Who uses MARC

Corporate legal departments, law firms, ALSPs, and specialized investigation units. Common use cases: litigation document review, internal corporate investigations, regulatory inquiries, second requests, and post-incident breach response.

4.9 Integrations and technical scope

MARC is a Relativity developer partner with a direct API integration for ingestion and output, and can export CSV overlays, TXT, or native files for any review platform. It operates on extracted text and images (upstream processing typically handled by tools such as Nuix or Relativity), can directly ingest PST files and Microsoft 365 documents for smaller matters, and analyzes content across major languages, with extensive CJK (Chinese, Japanese, Korean) testing.

4.10 Pricing (MARC)

MARC is licensed at a flat monthly rate for unlimited use, regardless of document volume. The only additional consumption cost is cloud compute for local models or token fees paid directly to a public LLM provider under the client’s own agreement; MARC does not upcharge for LLM usage.

5. How the Products Relate

The Altorney Platform and MARC are separate products. MARC does not require Altorney reviewers; the Platform does not require MARC. Used together, MARC performs first-pass classification and prioritization while Platform reviewers validate and complete the review.

6. What Altorney and MARC Do Not Do

  • Altorney does not provide legal advice; it provides technology and a reviewer marketplace.
  • MARC does not perform legal research, draft pleadings, or render legal advice.
  • MARC does not use client matter data to train models.
