Think Fast — By Steve Goldstein

March 20, 2025

In early 2023, I wrote about the pace of change in the legal technology industry. Now, two years later, I’m writing about… the unprecedented rate of change in the legal tech industry.

It’s getting faster—so fast that keeping track of new companies and products is nearly impossible.

Which brings us to next week. Legalweek NYC.

The Big Show. The Super Bowl of legal tech conferences. Or, as my wife calls it, the annual gathering of the Nerd Club. (She’s not wrong.)

Even more than last year, we’ll be awash in “AI-powered” solutions. Some will be game-changers. Some will be glorified macros. Some will be an old feature with “AI” slapped on the label.

So how do you separate the real from the marketing hype? Simple. Ask the right questions.

Does it solve an actual problem? Or is it a “solution” in search of a problem?

Is there an ROI? Or is it just very cool?

Does anyone actually need it? Or is this another tool doing amazing things for the sake of doing amazing things?

Does it actually do what it claims? We should be good at sniffing this out by now, after 20+ years of dealing with software that never performs as well as the demo.

At Legalweek, every booth will be selling the future. Not all of them will deliver it.

So before you get super excited, ask the hard questions.

If the answers don’t roll off the provider’s tongue, grab your branded stress ball and walk away.

Quickly.
